On-line Learning on MY-TIME
On-line learning as been a part of my life for the last five years. I took almost all of my Hamline -ESL classes on-line. The great thing about on-line learning is when you live out in the sticks you can still partake in higher education. I am directly seventy-five miles form the twin cities, St. Cloud, Marshall and Mankato, so being able to go on-line and learn has been a huge benefit. Another positive for on-line learning is when you are the only person in your department in a low incident school having the ability to connect with other ESL people around the world will dramatically widen my horizon. I have had the opportunity to belong to an on-line learning community this past year. My Title III group has been communicating by using Moodle. It has been time consuming, but we have gained a wealth of knowledge about technology by participating in the project. Within these short three weeks -I have been exposed to many more technology integration pieces and there is still more to learn! The only set back is when there is a problem with my computer or Internet service. Overall, I can go to the lake and still be involved in a class. It's great. Technology- truly is great when it works!

Hi Doreen,
Your Title III project sounds interesting. Could you tell us more about it. Who, what, where, when?
By using Moodle- the Goal for our On-line Learning Community was that we would select and use technology tools to help us obtain and present information in a timely matter, analyze and synthesize the information, and present it professionally to meet Minnesota Academic Standards. In the Spring of 2006 -individually we compared our E2T2 assessment (a survey on-line through TrueNorthLogic) to ISTE teacher standards, and increased our technology integration knowledge and skills. In the Spring of 2007 we took the E2T2 assessment and compared our data. As team members we developed a shared mission, collaborated and decided which model to use to develop a unit (Looking at Student Data) that was aligned with the Minnesota Academic Standards and the ISTE NETS to help our students construct knowledge using technology tools. This group has eight ESL teachers from our Title III consortium and our sponsor is Minnesota River Valley Education Cooperation.
I am glad you mentioned the time consuming aspect: I thought it was just me. You are right: time consuming or not-- it is still worth it!
Very impressed with your Title III project...
Interesting. Can you share with us the specifics of a key takeaway or two (enlightening observation or perhaps lesson learned) that will inform you on your next similar endeavor?
