The dog can't eat the homework! I think not having to make hard-copies of assignments is one of the best reasons for on-line exercises. With on-line exercises homework is posted and there shouldn't be an excuse of -I lost my paper. Most students enjoy computer class. They love to "USE" technology, therefore they are very engaged in using technology to learn. You can have frequent quizzes and hopefully they won't complain. The otherwise quiet student may open up more on-line. Having e-portfolios would be the ultimate way to watch your students' growth. I agree with McNulty, the greatest potential for an on-line classroom and exercises is in its ability to help teachers create student-centered classrooms. If we as ESL teachers or educators- in general -can instill a love for learning and a curiosity to be critical thinkers by using on-line classrooms and exercises, then the integration of technology has made a positive effect on teaching. The downfalls would be no Internet service when you have the computer lab scheduled, the tech support person isn't in your building or antiquated computers have hindered the exercises on-line.

I agree that we get dependent on the technology and often times take it for granted. It can be a disaster when the Internet is off, which happens too often, when computer labs are overpopulated and overbooked. Ofen times, back-up plans are not as exciting as web-based activities, and students can be disappointed: they catch up the instructor's mood right away.

Hi Doreen,
I like that. The dog can't eat the homework. However, with computers, other, often more legitimate, excuses arrive. "My computer crashed" "My email bounced" "My cat ate my mouse", etc.
Funny: cats, dogs, mice. Nice graphic, Doreen -- you're going professional! I like that idea of stealth quizzes, or sneaking them in while they're so engaged and don't realize it. ;-)
Oh, yes, I've had that experience of counting on the computer lab for class time and then something goes wrong- with the computers or scheduling.
I guess we always need to have other lessons ready and other tricks up our sleeves, because you just never know.
I've really enjoyed the post and the comments. I think a hard copy is still an important thing to have. Of course, you can save things to your own hard drive or the server but something about the ability to hold it- tangible in your hands- is security. I agree that there can still be valid reasons for excuses but as users get more comfortable with the programs there should be less valid reasons. Every so often when a new operating system comes out, it seems to cause lots of unexpected problems.People like Windows XP now but back then there were lots of complaints. One of my friends also says that she has a hard time getting on My Space during busy periods.
